Welcome to the DIY Lighting centre. In here you can find all electrical projects and guides for lighting, please ensure that you know 100% what you are doing before even considering doing any electrical work yourself and if in doubt consult a qualified electrician.
Never work on a live circuit, you must ensure that the circuit that you are working on is isolated and cannot be switched back on accidentally.
Switching off the light at the light switch does not isolate the electricity to the ceiling rose or light fitting. You must isolate the circuit that you are working on from the consumer unit or fuse box!
Questions about changing light fittings or wiring lighting circuits are very common and to be honest I am not surprised. Some of the light fittings on the market today are barely fit for the purpose that they are intended and can be extremely difficult for the DIY'er to fit.
I once fitted a light fitting for a friend and it had seven live wires and several neutral wires that all required terminating into the light connection. Then when you remove the ceiling rose cover and there are 9 more wires and so it can seem a very daunting task.
