Painting Outside Window Frames - Leaving Windows Open

Post by Clueless68 »

Hi All,

I'm going to paint my outside window frames and I need some advice about leaving windows open while they dry.

Ideally they would be left open until completely dry, but this is not always possible. For instance, having to leave the house before they've finished drying, or securing the house for the night.

I've been advised to wait until the frames are at least touch dry before closing the windows. If the windows stick, just use gentle taps with the heel of your hand to get the windows open.

It seems to me that this could compromise the integrity of the paint, and reduce how long it lasts before it needs painting again.

Any advice?

Putting windows onto their safety catch setting might be an option. Removing rubber seals (if any are in situ) will prevent a tight fit between sash and frame.

All paint needs to cure I'm afraid, and most of these exterior finishes are typically softer and more flexible than their interior counterparts.

Vaseline used sparingly can help, but I'd be very careful it doesn't compromise the surface finish/adhesion.
