Applying woodstain

I seem to struggle with this (Lord knows how I'll get on with painting bedrooms!).

I used some ronseal 5-year woodstain on some redwood I had. Despite applying minimally using a brush and building up layers, I still ended up with runs down the corners. I must be doing something wrong.

The wood itself isn't for anything special - just to attach to the shed batons so I can hang some garden tools up. I still wanted to make sure I did it well.

Is there a good or preferred way to apply stain? Should I be looking at foam brushes or applying with cloths instead?

I find that foam brushes are certainly a better way to achieve a consistent finish with stains than conventional bristle brushes are
