On square edge worktops, you only need a butt joint.

If they have a slight chamfer you need to mitre them.

they sound like theyll be the sort you put the smaller mason mitre on like. my jig doesnt have that capability though so i gotta just go with a standard mason mitre all the time.
gan canny with the tops if they are mirror chip. and watch the cutter. i found they chipped really easily

I Always use a new cutter and take a shallow pass to cut through the laminate using dust extraction really helps, I just need a longer hose for mine as it's now to short

Re: square edge worktop fitting help
aye.. the one i did a while back. i had to cut this particular top with the top upside down. so it was right hand male joint. new cutter. when i cut through the top it chipped loads out on the work surface. i ended up cutting the joint 4 times before it was good enough. when id finished i looked at the cutter and it was propper hammered. only ever had it on that particular type of work top.
was using my extractor on the router that day too.

Have you done many like that then dude? I just did a standard mason mitre on the bench I mentioned earlier. I was at some point gonna get a different jig to allow me to do both types of mason mitre joint

Both types of mason's mitre? Wossat?fin wrote:I was at some point gonna get a different jig to allow me to do both types of mason mitre joint
In the "olden days" before there were router jigs, mason's mitre joints were cut with a saw and cleaned up with a router and straight edge. The angled piece on the female part of the joint was awkward as you had to creep up on the fit with a combination of files, chisels and a shoulder plane - but it meant that you could cut a very small, discrete mitre on tops with a small edge radius. Not that I'd want to go back - a joint like that could easily take 1-1/2 to 2 hours in a tight kitchen. Small wonder that a lot of guys took the easy option and just cut a big mitre

see how theres a different angle at each end?
use the shallow angle when theres a slight radius edge on the worktops. like a lot of howdens tops.
normal end for normal post formed type worktops.
however i just use my trend 1002 jig so i have to put the same on all the tops. or butt join em like speed said.

Re: square edge worktop fitting help
You never blagged a free jig from howdens fin? I've had mines about 6/7 years,I think it's a unika jig with howdens branding but it's a nice piece of kit especially for free!
