Plastering over ceramic tiles
Hi Everyone, I have a question to ask of the forum members. Is it possible to apply a plaster finish of approx. 2mm over ceramic tiles?
It is in a kitchen area and the only other alternative is to take all the tiles off ( approx. 20 sq. mtrs.) and then replaster.
This is a big job and would rather plaster over exist. tiles if possible, maybe with a couple of coats of PVA. What does the team think?
Many Thanks

Re: Plastering over ceramic tiles
Yes, you can plaster over tiles.
Give it a coat with Wickes bonding agent, as it is better than PVA.
You can also throw a few handfuls of sand onto the bonding agent when it is wet to enable the plaster to stick better.

Re: Plastering over ceramic tiles
just be aware that the plaster will only be bonded onto the bonding agent and not the wall thus makeing it weaker. if you wait till the bonding agent is dry then use you finger nail youll see the bonding agent hasent actually bonded to the tiles its simply dried ontop.
i personally would take the tiles off and do a proper job.

Won't take long to get them off with a roto stop chisel. Like the other lads say, you'll have a much better job having got them off.

Re: Plastering over ceramic tiles
If you plaster the tiles, the kitchen fitter will be unable to fix to the wall withut using tile drills which they may not have. They may also crack your skim because they can bash about a bit.
They would probably tell the customer that you are a cowboy, so even if it does work, you are unlikely to get a recommendation for further work.

Point made, thanks, guess I'll park my horse and take the tiles off ( my wife's been saying this all along ) but I was looking for the easy way out.jozeffo wrote:If you plaster the tiles, the kitchen fitter will be unable to fix to the wall withut using tile drills which they may not have.
