Before you start tiling you need to do some preparation work, firstly you need to decide what pattern the tiles are going to be laid in and then you need to determine the best starting point.

Avoid having to cut thin slivers of tile   Before fixing the tiles it is important to measure the wall or floor to be tiled by ensuring that there will be no difficult slivers of tile to cut around the edges, thin slivers are very hard to cut and consume lots of time which is totally unnecessary. Simple measuring and planning of the correct starting point can make the job a whole lot easier.

This picture demonstrates how a wall could look if someone had started tiling with a full tile in the bottom left corner, this has left difficult cuts along the top and the right hand side of the wall.

You should leave a 6mm gap around the perimeter of the tiling to accommodate movement, this will stop the tiles breaking or coming loose due to movement of the building.

slivers   Although this is a very neat tiling job it has left some extremely difficult and time consuming cuts in the corner.

Cutting slithers of tiles like this should be avoidable by planning the correct place to start.
