glass tiles |
Glass tiles are a little more difficult to work with than other tiles as they can be easily damaged and cutting them requires special equipment.
|
Adhesive
Choose an adhesive that is suitable for your particular application. If you are tiling a splash back ensure that a special additive is added to the grout to prevent it staining. Epoxy resin based adhesives must not be used. In all the cases it is essential to follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Cutting Glass tiles
Glass tiles are best cut with a diamond wheel cutting machine but with a special blade that is suitable for Glass. Some professional flat bed tile cutters will also cut Glass tiles. Nibblers / nippers can also be used but you need a special pair with jaws designed specially for Glass. The cut edge of Glass tiles must be smoothed with a carborundum stone.
Drilling Glass Tiles
Glass tiles can be drilled with either a dedicated tile / glass drill or a diamond coated drill / Hole saw but plenty of water is required to keep the bit cool and to prevent discolouration due to heat build up.
Fixing Glass tiles
It is recommended that Glass tiles
are fixed to a surface that is uniformly coloured, so you need a light
colour for light tiles. The tiles must not be in direct contact with
flames or sources of heat.
Finishing
Glass tiles normally only require Grouting but There must be grout of at least 2 mm between the tiles and special grout is required, do not use grouts that are epoxy based or contain Quartz sand.
