The inner ear is where sounds are turned into electrical signals that go to the brain. It is the tiny hairs on the cochlea that pick up the sound vibrations. These hairs can easily get damaged if they are made to vibrate too vigorously – especially if this is continuous. Any damage to the inner ear cannot be reversed.

When using some power tools it is essential to protect your hearing with suitable ear protectors- A passing train is loud (90 decibels). Although this would not cause immediate damage, continuous exposure to this level can cause hearing loss. After 40 years of being exposed to this level for a working day of eight hours, 60% of people would lose their hearing.

There are several different types of ear protectors available, when purchasing ear defenders you must ensure that you get the correct defenders for the amount of noise that is to be expected. The "Muff" type of ear defender normally reduces sound much better than the type that are inserted into the ear.

This type of ear defender often referred to as the "Muff" type normally offers the highest amount of protection from sound.

There are different types available, some filled with foam and some filled with Oil.

Models are also available that are electronic and filter out noise above a certain level, leaving the wearer the ability to still hear noise below the set level.

Foam ear plugs are normally made for single use and are normally disposed of after use.

These plug types do not offer the same level of hearing protection that the Muff types do.

It is essential that you get the correct size of these plugs or their effectiveness will be compromised.

These two types of ear plugs are similar to the foam ones above. I have tried the ones on the left and found that they do not reduce noise well enough.

If you are working in very noisy conditions a pair of ear plugs should be used and a pair of ear Muff defenders, this will reduce sound considerably!
