The car starts up ok and begrudingly ticks over at about 400rpm. When you press the accelerator to increase the revs nothing happens it just sirs at 400rpm
Anyone got any ideas

Accelerator cable? If not then it's an open circuit throttle position indicator (TPI) potentiometer.

What age and what cc? some models don't have a throttle cable, (fly by wire) possible ECU or ECU control relay, is the engine management light on?

the management light came on about 6 months ago for about 3 days, but strangely went off when i went over a speed bump ( yes i thought strange too) so i just thought it was a loose wire or something.
Other than that it been ok

i suspect either e.g.r valve or air mass meter

egr's do get stuck on many makes; PITA they are.... OP worth giving this a clean andf checking he valve seats properly.

MAF can be checked by unpluging and starting the car.

zafira's have a common egr problem... usually manifest in loss of power, think they reccommend a replacement valve or removing it all together, also could be pedal switch or a broken wire somewhere in the loom....
