Not taken from an aeroplane - this pic was taken from the world's tallest building, in Dubai!

If you jumped from the top it would take 20 sec before you hit the deck.

Dubai is an amazing place - went a couple of years ago - they want to be the biggest, fastest, longest, deepest, first at everything, and they appear to be doing that.

I can't remember the exact figure but something like 2/3rds of the worlds cranes are in Dubai

I remeber watching a programme about it. It was saying that lifts will travel at over 40mph  Some of the lifts you will be able to use in a fire :?
There will be special fire rooms within the complex which will have air con seperate from the building. I can't remember how long they are fire proof.

The makers were also saying that they had major problems trying to figure out how to deal with the desert winds, and the suns rays.

Another problem was how to pump all that concrete up to the higher levels of the building.

The Burj al Arab has (or had) the fastest lift in the world - 800mtrs in 10secs.

Its also the tallest hotel in the world or at least it was when we were there but they've probably built a taller one since then :?

I'd get a nose bleed on the top floor, does your ears 'pop' when going up in the lift.

Unbelievable.

For a lift to travel 800m in 10 sec:

The maximum it could accelerate is to 100 mph in 4.5 seconds by which time it will have travelled 380 m. If it accelerated any faster, you would hit the lift ceiling; as it is, you become weightless for 4.5 seconds.

It would then travel for 1 second at 100 mph before decelerating, when your weight doubles for the 4.5 seconds deceleration time.

I think that after descending 800m in 10 seconds, few people would be left standing in the lift. They'd have to crawl out.
