Hi,
I'm looking to buy a wood carving kit as a present for someone who does alot of wood working but hasn't got into carving. Really don't know what i'm buying, I'm thinking chisels and v gouges but wondered if anyone can suggest a reasonable quality kit?

Many Thanks

Marples chisels, Rutland gouges. I use all kinds of random other stuff, stanley plane, surform and spokeshave, Nicholson rasp. All kinds of old and rusty rasps and files I've picked up including this massive horse hoof file. Also got a decent jigsaw and belt sander.
One thing you must always invest in as well however, is a decent set of stones, you can spend as much as you like on a tool and it'll be rendered useless if you don't keep it sharp, not to mention dangerous much like a blunt kitchen knife. I use a 2 stones, 800/1200 and 4000/8000, keeps things sharp. You can use a honing guide but I never much cared for them.

I hand carve guitars as a hobby but I've done some other larger stuff.
