A friend is having problems with an obnoxious and potentially violent ex. I am looking for a CCTV system with sound, not too expensive, as said friend is on a tight budget, to act as a deterrent and evidence gatherer. Any ideas or suggestions would be welcome. One camera would do and it will need to be weatherproof.

A few things about CCTV you should know.

CCTV does not have sound.
A camera does not record anything, you need a storage "facility" Such as a digital video recorder / SD card to store images on
Cheap cameras have a poor resolution. (When you make the picture bigger to see, you can't make out who or what you are looking at.)
You can get an "add on" microphone that some DVRs will store the sound but a standard CCTV camera does not record sound.

I am sorry to say but the "problem" in what you have asked is the words "Tight budget" its not going to happen

I have even seen "Nature cameras" used (Ones you set up outside to record any movement of wildlife) but they don't record sound and the "decent" ones start at £150

As Someone else CCTV does not come with sound. Nevertheless, have a look at CPC in case there is something http://cpc.farnell.com/w/c/security-cct ... ts?st=CCYV

EDIT. For example http://cpc.farnell.com/defender-securit ... 92?st=CCYV has audio (no details what does it do) but it does not appear to be wifi.

you can get cameras with audio not strictly cctv

all depends on budget wifi adds to the cost, you need to get power to it anyway so another cable isn't a big issue

Hikvision cameras aren't bad for the money - the night vision is very good for the cost effective end of the market

eg. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UK-HIKVISION ... Sw~G1Z139w

Is it me, or did I miss the bit that says it has a microphone? I did see "audio alarm" but no microphone.

Probably out of my depth, but could a car 'Dash-Cam' be used?
Smaller than the CCTV type and usually have sound. Perhaps positioned in a window, but no idea if the wiring would be OK in the house than in the cat???

Not really. (Nice idea though) since it fails on too many reasons

stevei wrote:

Dash cam is so small it will never act as a deterrent (Part of the idea of CCTV)
It can not be mounted outside
The resolution of the cheaper ones is not that good.
If it is behind a window it can not record sound outside the window
Easily damaged / as is the recording*

If a CCTV camera is used and the camera is attacked if it were a dash cam the memory card would also be lost / damaged. CCTV uses a digital video recorder else where in the property. (You could smash the camera to bits, but the DVR would still hold the evidence of it being done and by whom.)

John lewis sell the go pro 5 for £ 180 as per my link. I'm sure some-one on 200+ thousand a year won't care about the difference though,

:tongue3: .

There's quite a bit of difference between a GoPro Black and a GoPro Session hence the Session being a much cheaper camera.

Joking aside, that is not true.

Have you never noticed people with money always have a cupboard that is full of lightbulbs and carrier bags?

People with money are quite often watching every penny, I am not saying they wont buy a very posh / expensive car, but they will debate (not argue) over how much they will pay for it.
