I foolishly painted the chimney stack last year during the big freeze and some of the paint came off and spread (streaked) along the slates.

I have tried various products , including WD4O and a brillo pad without success and I have now also given the rain about 10 months to wash it away (since I was told these paints are water based I thought time would have some effect).

I suppose I could just change (or reverse) the slates but I would probably get a professional to do that .

Has anyone any other ideas?

Well it would have worked if you tried it so I think you must have been blinded by the obviousness of it all.
