Never seen one ice up yet, when they do it usually means they are undersized.

It is true that air source heat pumps are not as efficient as ground or water source heat pumps, especially at sub zero temperatures, but not everyone has a plot of ground twice the footprint of the building to install the collector loops, it can also be expensive to install at 4feet plus below ground where the average uk temperature is 12c.

If the unit is icing up indoors, then it's a problem with low gas or insufficient lagging.

Quite..... but when the outside evaporator coil is a block of ice they struggle and pump a lot of energy into getting rid of the said ice either by electric heating elements or reversing the cycle and producing heat for the iced up coil by cooling the room they are ment to be heating.

My system reverses the cycle, but it does not cool the room in doing so. The indoor units are switched off whilst the outdoor unit is deicing and this condition is shown on the controllers. I know the heat must come from somewhere, I don't know where, but it certainly is not by cooling the room.

When the cycle is reverse it becomes a fridge without a door, so it takes the heat from the within unit.
