Some of you might have seen me mention my 3 white goods before. Well, here is another post!

The more I think about it, the more I realise I just don't know what I want to do. I have a washing machine, tumble dryer and dishwasher that I need to place but can't decide where they should go. I have 2 ideas about what I can do:

Current floor plan

Proposal 1

This is what I was originally going to do. Here I put all the appliances against a wall in the kitchen which I can't see being used for anything else. This will keep the cupboard I plan on creating in the extension free. However the major downside I can see here is that it will be noisey!

Proposal 2

Here I put the two main noisey machines, the washing machine and tumble dryer, in the cupboard I will create in the extension. The space dictates they would have to be one on top of the other. This means they are out of sight and the noise should be much less. I would probably keep the dish washer in the kitchen. It wouldn't matter how noisey the dish washer gets as I could run it at night. My lounge would then be protected from the evil noise!

So what do you guys think?

Do you have the washing machine & tumble drier at the moment? Do you know how noisey they will actually be?...

You mention using the dishwasher at night, most modern appliances allow timed use, so you could program the washing machine & tumble drier too.

We set our washing machine to run during the day so its finished when we get home, then place wet clothes in the dryer and set that to run early morning so its done just before we wakeup.

Otherwise, Is it possible to use some kind of partition between the kitchen & lounge? Or is there space to build the appliances into a cupboard in the kitchen location?

I can see how you'd be reluctant to use the space in the exentsion when you floor plan is already tight for space, and having the appliance in the kitchen would also give you extra worktop/storage space.

the usual first considerations are drainage water then electrics

you need a quote for all the areas you are considering as you may be talking 2 or 300 pounds difference just for the plumbing and wireing

putting in a cupboard may make it better soundwise but it may make things worse dependant on construction :cb

apart from possibly the washing machine on fast spin i would be surprised if they make any noise loud enough to disturb your addiction to the tv
perifferal noises soon get filtered out by your brain

i have a fairly close set up to yours although my washing machean is only 5m from my ear in a direct line it dosnt bother me in the least
indeed when i am in the kitchen watching the small tv the washing is 12" away and the tv is 3ft away and dosnt bother me

Mr Goblin, I think you can see the problems the way I see them.

I only have the dish washer at the moment.

I don't think I could build a cupboard in the kitchen to house the appliances. The bottom floor is open plan-ish and it would probably make the kitchen seem weirdly shaped. A partion of some kind would also stand out. Putting a counter over them would be practical. That way I have gained a work surface and placed the appliances and can keep create the cupboard in the extension to be used for other things. Cupboards are so damn useful.

I will consider your ideas about using timers more closely.

I did BA

Definitely go for the kitchen option.

If you level the machines up properly you can hardly hear them.

I did spot your reply! I ran out of time at work and I didn't get home until very late... so I'm replying now!

I will be doing the work myself, so the cost will only be for the materials. If I need any tools then I am sure my dad will have them. He is a tool-a-holic.

The drainage and electrics for either of the layouts will be easy, fortunately. I say it like I've done it before, but the consumer unit and waste stack are all very close by.

The more I think about it the more I think that having them all in the kitchen is best. I was wondering though, if I am going to put them under a counter, how much wiggle room do you need for the tumble dryer? I would like to get a vented one (to save money and ensure it is more reliable) but I am aware that they require a huge vent pipe. The pipe would either need to come out of the back or the right of the unit. I ensured that when the counter goes down there would be a bit of space in the corner for pipework. Is this not really going to be a problem?
