| I have two fro new computers its Ubuntu and for old computers its PuppyLinux out of these two I'd have to say Puppy is the fav. |

Tough question. I love Linux (Kubuntu 8.04). It's fast, stable never needs defragging and I've never EVER had a virus. The only problems with Linux are the learning curve, and the fact that most of the truly great software is only coded for Windows. There are some things which can be run through virtualisation software, but that's not native Linux. I have also noticed that Linux doesn't have instant support for some audio/media formats (as windows does), and that you often have to jump through hoops to get things to work. This is also often the case for hardware too. Most of my hardware seems to be designed for Windows and works pretty much out of the box, whereas this is rarely the case for Linux.
I find Windows is the easiest to work with, but I spend far too much time troubleshooting problems and hunting down virus's. Windows is also a resource hog, and it's creators are just money hungry. I often find that the Linux equivalent of most Windows software is only a fraction of the size.
In honesty, I am torn between the two, but if there were more people developing software for Linux instead of Windows, I would gladly switch to Linux, and never look back at Windows again.

I have a Mac notebook, Max OS X Safari, and a windows XP as a parallel desktop.
I do like the Mac it's so much faster and certainly less troublesome.

Admittedly the learning curve is harsh but so it would be the other way round if you'd only ever used linux.
Linux does support all audio/media formats some distrobutions natively, try Linux Mint, all codecs are in place as standard. The only reason some dont as standard (Ubuntu for example) is purely down to DMA dogma but they can be downloaded once everything is installed.
Windows doesn't support all formats natively either you have to install codec packs as well.
I undersatnd the frustration with hardware difficulties and you'll never get brand new hardware working with linux mainly because of Micro$oft and the hardware manufacturers.
Linux coders have to reverse engineer most of the hardware released because the manufacturers wont work with a company that gives away stuff for free and if they do it either has something to do with money or its as a second thought (ATI).
There are more people by far developing linux and linux based software than there ever will be for windows you only have to look at the 6 monthly release dates of one distro (x/k/ubuntu) to see that not to mention the 1000+ other distros. |

I have used loads of OSes both for personal stuff and work.
Windows from V1 through to 98
Windows NT Desktop and Server from 3.1 to XP and Server 2003
OS/2 - both MS and IBM
Unix System V Rel 4.32
I stick to XP Pro now and find it does what I need.
Tried Linux OSes of plenty different flavours but get fed up with having to constantly "think techie" if I want to change anything and give up  . Then try again a bit later and get fed up again
I just want the bloody thing to work when I turn it on and Windows for all its faults does do that.

Unix and it's derivatives ARE Operating Systems, Windoze is a joke of a so-called O/S.
I use Apple OSX and love it. Used more operating systems that I have had hot meals; IMB DOS (IMB 370 1968) through DEC PDP II, Data General Nova, Varian V70's, Intel ISIS, CPM80/86, MSDOS then I went downhill - I was 'forced' to used MS junk from 1986 through to 2000 then SANITY the Apple  |

Used most flavours of Unix and Linux (Redhat and FedoraFC) when in IT.
Now I use Windoze expee at home for most stuff but have a Linux partition to play with.
Love Linux but it is a bit techie - where's me anorak? |

I have to fix PC's for a living so I don't want to spend time doing the same at home, which means its XP all the way!
For my file server I use '2000 Server'.
