i wake up coughing just thinking about the dust and mess..

if the rafters are not all inline is it possible to put timber battons underneath so we end up with a level ceiling.

also i plan to get a pro in to finish of the walls is it best to use square edged board or tapered i need to do as much of the work myself.

A good way to even out the levels if there is just a small amount is by using shims/packers

I used these to even out ceiling cladding over a 1930's plaster and lath ceiling and they were very quick to use

With my cladding, it was dead easy as I could always see where they needed to be and leveled as I went.
With sheets of plasterboard, it is more tricky and not something I have done myself. If I was doing one, would probably mark out where you are fitting the drywall screws across (every 16" I would guess?), and then going along (maybe 16" again? A pro would be best to advise)

Then where you will be screwing PD into rafters, before that, screw in the skims in the same place, packing them to be level across the ceiling using a spirit level to get the levels right (but using the level first to find the low point - which is probably on an outside wall) - that way, the screws will be going into the rafters - and hard against the shim so you keep the PB level.

That would the way I would tackle it personally- but others may have better ideas

Oh - if you were wondering, they are colour-coded for different thickenesses and you mix and combine to get the right build-up :thumbright:
