I was given one of these old hand-cranked instruments, but it doesn't work. After seeking advice I opened it up, found a wire adrift, but reconnecting it gives no change. It appears to have been repaired before. Is it worth persevering with, or should I scrap it and get a new one?

Well, I have never seen a hand cranked one, but the one I use at work is an old one and is in a old leather case. They are not cheap to buy brand new!

The old hand cranks dont provide enough current to comply with the current regs for certification perposes but are a handy thin to have around for fault finding. Im shure as long as the windings are good the meter will be easy to fix.

The circuit is different to the official diagrams I've seen, there is a 0.1uF 1500V capacitor and a 3K9 resistor which seem to be OK, plus two other unidentifiable components. The generator is healthy, so are the meter coils. It seems to have been repaired a few times judging by the soldering, and as it was left in a sorry state, it may have defeated the last person.

Just looked at some new models that comply with latest regs, prices between £90 and a couple of grand!. I've now arranged for a washing machine engineer I know to call by on Wednesday, to test the UFH element before I cover it with tiles.
