I have just moved into a 12 year old home. Previous occupant has bricked up a serving hatch between kitchen and dining room. Trouble is, its not been finished at all well :cb and has a wavy finish :hello2: and cracks round the edges. What can I do about this? I don't want to chisel it off because I am afraid I will crack the tiles fitted to the other side. And I would prefer not to skim again because it would mean shifting coving and skirting. Help!

When you say wavy finish, how bad is it?

I would probably re-skim (so long as it's not a massive wall otherwise this would be a bit much). This would be the best thing as otherwise you'd have to take out the bricks where the hole is and start from scratch to level it out.

Its noticable, I guess difference between peaks and troughs is less than 1mm. I don't want to take out the bricks and start again because I don't want to disturb the other side, which has been very well tiled.
