I have a soil pipe coming down from the upstairs bathroom. I want to plumb the washing machine waste into said pipe downstairs. Can this be done?
I understand a special type of trap would be needed to stop blow back - what exactly do I need?

I think you can do it with a strap on boss and a washing machine trap for starters-

strap on boss

washing machine trap

Chez,
both your links go to the washing machine trap.
The hidden url is the same in both.

Think this is the one you meant.
Strap on boss

Yes a strap on boss and washing machine standpipe and P trap should do the job, but keep it up about 400mm from the bend.

Thanks for the info on the boss - in the screwfix trolley already!

SWMBO also wants to original toilet reinstating (we've smashed an old downstairs loo into the old coal shed to make a bigger internal room), so I want to ensure we don't have issues when this happens.

Would I need some kind of trap to stop the toilet sucking the trap dry and thus letting the smells up the washing machine waste pipe?

You also need a 40mm boss adapter to be able to fit the 40mm pipe to the boss.

Boss adapter

Infact it'll work out cheaper if you go to B&Q and get a standard 40mm strap on boss

Marley Strap On Boss (Dia) 110mm x (L) 40mm - available in Black or Grey

Not all strap-on bosses require an adapter, some are O ring to the right size.

No, get the proper washing machine trap and standpipe, it's sold as a kit.
