Masonry Paint over Oil-based paint

Post by Gummo »

The front of my terraced-house has always been painted with oil-based gloss. I want to use a masonry paint instead - is this possible? If so, would a thorough abrasion with a wire brush suffice to key the surface?

Also, would you recommend, Sandtex, Johnstone's or Dulux?

No expert but my guess is it's not gonna work unless all the existing oil based paint is removed.

It's called masonry paint as it's designed to go onto masonry - if you put it onto something else (i.e. on top of oil based paint) then it probably won't adhere to the surface or dry properly and therefore won't last very long. Probably not what you want to do but could you use the same type of paint again? Alternatively you could use chemicals to remove the existing and get back to the original masonry.

You just need an adhesion primer first then crack on.

Someone's recommended Zinsser Bullseye 123 - it claims to be paintable, without sanding, over almost anything. I'm going to sand and try it before masonry paint.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Give it several days to fully adhere, think it says 7 from memory.

Masonry Paint over Oil-based paint

Well, I Zinssered it on Friday and applied two coats of masonary paint on Sunday. Everything went like a dream - I'm mightily relieved.

Thanks for your help.
