Up & over metal garage door.
Hi all. Is there anything I can use to be able to paint over Silicone Sealant? The bottom edge joint of the door collects rain water, which conveniently drips on me when I open the door, hence I applied sealant which cured the problem. So now it's time to repaint, any ideas?
If there isn't a paint on solution, I'll have to fix a length of UPVC to cover over the joint. Thought I'd try the forum first.

Re: Up & over metal garage door.
some of the more advanced sealants can be painted over, normal bog standard silicon can't.

If you want to paint over silicone sealant you will have to give it a coat of an adhesion primer first ie Zinserr bin and allow to dry and then paint.

I wouldn't count on even BIN sticking to silicone. Don't waste your money and do the job properly.

Re: Up & over metal garage door.
You already said it, a piece of uPVC to do the joint properly.
Unless you have tin of BIN already the PVC will likely be cheaper anyway, BIN is expensive stuff.

Re: Up & over metal garage door.
After I'd posted yesterday, I went to my local Home Improvements, & got 2, 2½ mtr lengths of white upvc, 75mm & 45mm, which was my first choice for the job. Decided the 75mm would be better, as the seem joint is almost 50mm. BUT today after prepping the door yesterday, I've applied the undercoat. When I got down to the seem, I figured as it going to be covered with a upvc strip, I'd carry on & paint over the sealant, which accepted it no problem & is now dry, Obviously it might not adhere after exposure etc, but job sorted anyway. Price of the 2 strips? £3

Re: Up & over metal garage door.
Paint over the sealant may or may not last assuming it grips at all. If it grips the problem you got is expansion and contraction - the flexibility of the sealant - that the paint will not cope with. Also BIN can only be used outside only for spot priming (resinous knots). I don't understand the problem and/or the solution, so I am not offering any ideas.

Re: Up & over metal garage door.
The problem was quite simple. The bottom edge of the door has a seal, which, over time, has allowed ingress. Remedy was to apply sealant along the seam. Now the time has arrived to re-paint. So, the "paint on sealant query" was posted. Even though I had more or less decided to cover said joint with a strip of upvc after applying a bead of sealant & securing with PK's.
So I don't see what you didn't understand. Simples!
Anyway job sorted, or will be when the final coat of Dulux Weathershield is applied.
