Apprentices

Post by Maz123 »

I'm thinking of getting an apprentice ...but.......

How do you go about it?
How do you find someone worth the cost, time and effort?

Or just an extra pair of hands would be useful :wav:

My mates a joiner and calls them his chimps. He asks his boss every morning " what chimp do I have today". It cracked me up when his wife told me.

Anyway back on topic.....

Crikey, now there's a conundrum! I'd start by contacting local colleges who are running training programmes to see if they have any suitable candidates. If someone has the gumption to go to college off their own bat then that's a start

It’s done through the citb and you can receive funding. Remember though that they’ll be at college 20 weeks on the first year,12 second year,10 on 3rd if doing advanced but you get them all to yourself on year 4.

We always referee to them as “arms and legs”

But I was one in 1973 did a full and proper C & G apprenticeship which has stood me in good stead all through my career in the lift industry.

More recently my son completed an apprenticeship as a truck mechanic and is doing ok prepping and repairing buses for MOT with a 100% pass rate last year

So I applaud any one who wants to give a young person with the right attitude and ability the chance.

It must have been later than that. My ex-mate is a P&D, he done a five year apprenticeship in the early nineties.

Construction Industry Training Board has a section on how to find an apprentice this might possibly help https://www.citb.co.uk/citb-apprentices ... pprentice/, also possibly a daft idea but giving any possibly candidate a quick reasoning or aptitude test, free ones at https://www.wikijob.co.uk/aptitude-tests-home for example, helps show who's on the ball and not quite so much of a chimp as the ones mentioned above :), hope this helps somehow
