Hi All,
I have some square oak newel post caps (post is also oak) that are flat - what's the best way of fixing them? Is regular wood glue enough or should I use araldite or similar?
Thanks

Re: Newel Post Caps - Flat Cap, Square
is the cap the same size or an overhang all round ??
if theres an overhang i would drill two dowels glued into the cap with matching holes in the newel
then strong double sided tape to hold in place
this makes moving furniture about an easier less damaging procedure

Re: Newel Post Caps - Flat Cap, Square
The problem you have is that glued on newel caps are very vulnerable to knocks and can come loose quite easily if banged. That is why you see loads with an awful nail in them and hammer marks in the wood where amateur repairs have been made. Big A's dowel method is a bit fiddly but a strong joint and probably the best way to do it. Having said this a well set glue joint should not fail. It needs compression with a heavy weight while the glue sets to create a good bond.
