Plywood table top extender - warping question

Post by Adendum »

Hi,

I am doing exactly the same as this post ( temporary-wooden-table-top-extension-t61237.html ) - making a temporary table top for Christmas. My question relates to the storage of the extending pieces.

I am using 25mm plywood and have cut a standard 8'x4' sheet in two for easier storage. Under each 'leaf' will be a glued and screwed U-shaped wooden frame, sized to fit the current table top, and the two 'leaf' parts will be clamped together on each side.

After using the extender it will probably be stored in the garage ... but it only just occurred to me that the dampness is likely to warp the plywood. So I was hoping there might be a method to seal the plywood to allow it to resist any moisture and avoid warping. Has anyone here successfully stored plywood in a garage without suffering from warping and if so how did they do that?

Paul.

Would they not slide under a bed when not in use? The 'U' shape does not have to be very thick it only stops drift.

Perhaps if you clamped the 2 face sides together in storage there would be less likely to warp.

Yeah, storing under the bed AND clamping them might be a solution but we're downsizing soon and I am pretty sure we'll need every inch in doors, so an outdoor (garage) solution would also be welcome...if anyone has any ideas.

For example, if I sealed the panels would that work?
