Using spray paint can paint in a spray paint gun.

Post by Jumanji95 » Wed Jun 20, 2018 1:00 pm

I tried using spray paint cans. They always come out lousy. I want to use a spray gun but the chrome colour I want is not available in a paint tin only in a spray can so I'm not sure what to do-
Is there some way to cut open the spray paint can and put it into the reservoir for the spray gun (using compressor) so that I can apply it that way?

Releasing the pressure from a spray can is very difficult without losing the contents.

Better to learn good spray can technique. Shake well, warm the can in a bucket of hot (not boiling) water and build up the paint in thin layers.

Watching TV, I've seen more and more professionals using cans for odd bits and pieces. Always worked OK for me as you say. Warm up, and use in a reasonably warm space.

Apart from anything else it's dangerous trying to release pressure from a spray can. They can explode if they're pierced. I wouldn't even try it.

you can get any colour you desire or something custom

note. 2k paint is highly toxic and requires the correct PPE, most paints these days are waterbased and require specialist hardener and thinner like lechler aquafan

If its anything more than a small job I get it done by a pro - your paying for there years of knowledge and skill, what takes years even decades to perfect, if its metal I send it to a powder coaters and have it bead blasted and coated you can have it done in any colour most places stock Ral and BS colours

If you talking about hard chrome on metal don't even bother painting it, either replace the part or get it re-chromed

The time alone out weighs the cost

i once was using a can of silicone lube on some plumbing fittings. up on scaffold. i knocked the can off and it fell about 10 ft and got pierced on a railing. then it started missioning about all ower the little yard until all the pressure was gone. it was canny funny like.

what was a bit less funny was the time a can of expanding foam got burst in the back of my van

You're right. My usual understatement!
Let's put it this way, I wouldn't want to be anywhere near one that was pierced. . .

You're also right about being mad to try it!

Chucking the empties on a bonfire is good fun - it's just like Napalm when it explodes and all the bits arrive wherever they're going, hedges, fences anything within range catches on fire. (I've worked with some strange people).
