Is this table solid wood or parts veneer?

Post by yartin »

Hi
I have seen a table online, 3 pics attached. It seems to be oak but not sure if all panels are solid wood or part veneer?

Thanks

Any advice on how easy would be to sand down by orbital, belt sander or 1/3 sander and poly urathane varnish the table top? and if it would look good!

A random orbital sander would do it. Progressively finer papers. I think that has been stained so it might go patchy as you cannot get all the stain out. Try and find a hidden area to experiment. If you get it bare I would use a water based lacquer as poly darkens over time. Go careful. It would be easy to mess it up.

If stained and can't get all stain out and patchy, can I stain using water based the whole table to uniform shade then apply water based poly?

It is never successful I have found. It is the nature of the wood absorbing stain deeper in some areas than others which makes it difficult to sand back. It may be a coloured lacquer though and this lays on the surface. You will only find out when you experiment. To be fair it looks quite good, I would leave it be and use it as it is. :thumbright:

Probably a combo of solid pieces for the structure and some veneer sections. Very difficult to say for certain as you can't see the end grain on the panels.

I was going by the middle picture of the table top extender. You can see the reverse of the panel that the fields are made from boards so I think it is solid.

Yes definitely solid there, I was more thinking about the larger panels.

We have a table that is mostly solid wood, legs, aprons etc, but the main panel is definitely veneer and very thin so it would be impossible to sand. Don't want the OP to find out the hard way!

Yes, agreed, I think Yartin would be best advised to leave it as is :thumbright:

Late to the party, I'd say the centre decorative panels were most likely veneer... outer frame is obv. solid.

Agree with the above, I think a lot of this furniture might be "solid wood" but it's strips of inexpensive solid wood put together and veneered.
The frame looks solid, but I'd be wary of sanding the panels.

If its solid Oak then it will be very heavy, try and pick it up is my advice, it could be that the legs are hollow, ie made from four sections of oak glued together, have seen it done on "Solid" Oak and "solid" Acacia tables. Nos
