Paint peeling off of contract matt

Hi,

We are currently redecorating a room that was replastered and decorated only a couple of years ago.

We have decided to have a feature wall and to ensure a crisp line have masked the edge of the wall in the corners.

On taking off the tape (frogtape delicate surface) the old paint beneath is peeling off. Where it's started peeling it can easily strip off.. I think I could peel off large sections quite easily.

Now, if this was back to the plaster I could understand that t was the mist coat that had failed. But it's peeling between the (leyland contract matt) mist coat and the previous top coat of regular matt dulux.

The wall was clean etc. when the dulux was applied 2 years ago.

Any thoughts on why this may be occurring?

Now I have lots of surface filling and repaint to do. I should have accepted my cutting in!

Is it a kitchen wall? or near the kitchen?

No it's a bedroom wall that is not near a bathroom or kitchen.

There are no damp problems in the wall either.

Did you mist coat the wall when it was newly plastered? Did you do a 50/50 dilution paint with water?

The mist was about 30% water.

The mist has adhered to the wall ok. It's the dulux on top that's coming off.

Maybe a bad batch of either the Leyland or dulux is all I can think it is.

There are two possibilities.

a. If the mist coat had too much water[*] and too little paint, the next coat of paint dried too fast by having its water absorbed into the plaster, hence the peeling off. That is, the mist coat did not do its job well enough.

b. the 1st coat of Dulux paint was applied in full thickness and a bit of absorption back to the above.

People complain about Dulux retail on this forum, I cannot say much as I do not know. There may be other explanations but since the mist coat is still on the wall, the mist coat has not failed but it may not have been good enough. And the weaker the mist coat the more likely to stay on the wall as long as there was no previous contamination. It is just that with a poor mist coat it is the next coat that will fail.

[*] Find the Leyland website and check the max dilution for the paint you used, and it may also specify the max dilution for mist coating. It may be 10% or more. The max dilution spec by the manufacturer is not to make people use more paint but there so many binders and other things in the paint that if diluted too much it won't do what it is meant to do.

That sounds likely enough. assuming trade dulux. Trade emulsion will want diluting 10ish % depending on the day ...
retail emulsion will want 80 % of trade paint adding coz retail paint is 90 % water...

Anyway, I've now cut back the worst of the loose paint, filled with TX110 and started painting. Needs one more coat and it shouldn't be too noticeable.

When you stick masking tape on try to only stick properly the side that is on the side to be painted. Then do not remove by pulling at 90 degrees but turn it on itself and pull it off at 180 degrees.
