Small hole in ceiling plasterboard - advice on filling pls

Post by logit »

Hi guys, I'm planning to decorate my study (home DIYer alert ) and I've seen a small (15mm diameter) hole in the ceiling plasterboard. I can poke my finger right through the hole into the ceiling cavity. I'd appreciate any suggestions on the best way to fill this before painting the ceiling. I assume normal filler won't work as it has nothing to fix up against and will just push through the hole?

Many thanks all

Just been doing some googling. Would drywall tape and spackling(!?) compound work for this?

Use a good powder filler made up stodgy, with less water. that can then be poked in and then left to go hard for a day or so and then make a smoother mix up to finish it off. The first fill just blocks the hole. Do not put loads in just a gentle push and leave it. If it was bigger then you could poke a lolly stick with glue on tied to a bit of string. You pull down on the string to stick it in place above the hole to stop filler going right through. I think you can get away without doing that.

as per DWD's advice.

"Spackling" is an American term for a filler (started as a brand name, now just a generic term for filler)
