Installation of new Drain/Grids

Post by salfordian »

Hello there, first time poster...

I'm a relative newbie when it comes to DIY, but am willing to have a go at most things. And boy, does it help having Youtube to see actual experts doing the jobs!

I currently have no grids for the drainpipes coming from the roof. The previous owner had water butts.

However, I found the pipes below...

I've provisionally fed the drainpipe into it for now, whilst the cast iron pipe on the right is a (currently unused) soilpipe from the bathroom. I'll be looking to cut this down and install new plastic.

As you can see, they both meet, which suggests to me that they were both once soilpipes (I think I'm right sayng they shouldn't feed into each other?)

Another image to show they join.

Firstly, can anyone advise me what the left pipe is?
I want to install a regular grid to take away the roof water from the gutters. What do you recommend?

And finally, admittedly, I haven't dug it up yet, but does anyone know what this pipe is to the left?

Like I said, I'm new to this, so any advice or guidance would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks in advance
