Electric shower too hot

Hi,

Have been using this Creda 950DL electric shower for around 3 or 4 years now, it's always worked fine until now.

Now when on any setting apart from cold, the water is very very hot, and trying to turn the knobs to adjust the temperature does nothing. Sometimes the overheating light comes on but it's not always on. The cold setting works ok, that is actually cold.

Is this issue caused by a faulty thermal cut out? I can't get this shower anymore but I can see that parts (such as TCO) are still available.

The electric showers I have seen rely on back pressure to heat the water.
The temperature buttons usually select one or two heating coils.
The temperature knob usually reduces the outgoing flow creating back pressure.
The shower head also adds to the back pressure (Which is why when buying one some say NOT suitable for electric shower, because the holes are too big / too many)

I would suggest you take the shower head off then try the shower, if its still hot I would say its the flow knob components that are the problem.
If its not hot when run without the shower head, I would say the shower head needs a good soak in vinegar to remove the calcium build up.

It might even be a very kinked shower to shower head hose.

What part of the country do you live? Hard or soft water?

My first thought would be the heating element scaled up and partially blocked.

Have you descaled the shower head?

The water is moderately hard.

It's fine with the shower head off! Descaling that now. I don't understand this though, why would limescale build up block or slow down the cold water flow?

It slows it down because it builds up layers (Over time) so reducing the diameter of the pipe.

Perhaps the flow rate when it's on cold has reduced & you've not noticed it.
Certainly sounds like a blockage or limescale has fu.ked the element.

Descaling the shower head didn't do much, made it slightly better.

Replaced the shower head and the hose and it's fine again. Thanks to everyone!
