Patio installed to high I've removed it, now what?

Post by 79pickup »

So as I guess with most people, you buy a house and all is well for a while, then You start to notice the issues!
So one of many is that the patio appeared to be above the dpc and as we have been having issues with damp I started to investigate as you do!

So fast forwarding a few months and digging, the patio slabs where sat on another patio and under those slabs was a concrete base! So over the years it's just been covered rather than removed.
So i set about removing some of the slabs and then digging down against the wall to basically make a trench that's below the dpc.

Now that's pretty much where I'm at, I've considered maybe some kind of French drain or just gravel I'm just not sure what's best, should I rip the whole patio up? just leave what's there?

Just need some pointers and ideas guys

Thankyou!

So I posted quite a while back about how the drain looked which was pretty grim it also gives an idea of how high the patio was at the time :

So moving forward it looks like this, with the tide mark quite visible under the patio doors:

I'm planning on painting the walls as a lot was flaking so been brushing off all the loose stuff beforehand.also I've repointed a few parts since the pics

Cheers guys

I would take up what is there and run a aco plastic drain close to the house and into the drain on the left hand side.

Assuming you plan to live here a long time, did it up and start fresh. An Aco drain as mentioned can be installed, they are a little unsightly but effective and easy to clean etc. A gravel top french drain looks nicer and is cheap to do, but harder to clean if you have a problem and prone to growing weeds etc.

Yes planning on being here a while, just a shame it's been in that state for so long.
