Hole cutter

Post by kellys_eye »

I've got a box full of these soffit vents to fit:

http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Roofing ... tem_detail

I know the description say they are 70mm diameter but that's their FULL diameter - the correct size press-fit hole is 65mm.

I have a set of Bosch hole cutters (quick change) but the nearest size is 64mm and I can't get the vents into a 64mm diameter hole for love nor hammering.....

I can't get hold of a 65mm hole cutter for the Bosch either (searching Screwfux for "hole cutter 65mm" returns a communications headset FFS ::b ) - so, am I not hammering hard enough  or is a 65mm hole cutter going to set me back 10x what I paid for the whole Bosch set?

Any advice please????

I use a screwfix 64mm erbaur(think that's how you spell it?) hole cutter and the vents fit nice and snugly. You can use a circular motion when drilling if they are tight.

I've found the same a steviejoiner, a 64mm hole usually works ok, I suppose it may depend a bit on the particular make of vent - but if yours really won't work, then -

Buy a cheapish 64mm hole saw - every manufacturer seems to do a 64mm - and with a saw-setting tool just turn the teeth out a touch. (or is it only me who still has a saw-setter?) If you haven't got one, ask an older carpenter. Actually, you may be able to bend the teeth out a touch with a decent pair of long-nose pliers)

OR - this may sound silly, but it could work - do you have an old drill with a wobbly chuck? If you do, stick the 64mm hole cutter in it and try it - the resulting hole should be a bit on the generous side.

Hi,

There are a few manufacturers that do a 65mm holesaw - Bahco, Starret, Spectrum, Draper Expert, Irwin

We don't currently have many in stock, but you can see what we do have http://www.ffx.co.uk/tools/refine/K=65m ... =_S=/1/2/1

Hope that helps,

Regards
Ian

What about putting the vents in the freezer for a while, it might be just enough to make them fit.

We try not to use these soffit vents at all and use an over fascia vent instead, much quicker and tidier.

Some great replies - thanks :thumbright:

@ SJ - circular motion? I'll give it a go.
@ CS - yes, I actualy DO have a sawtooth set tool! The teeth on the Bosch are quite hard and may break but if I can dig out an older cutter it may be possible.
@ Chappy - aye right..... for ONE hole maybe, but I have 70 of these to fit!
@ ayjay - yup, thought of getting one of those too, any excuse to buy more tools
@ FFX - nice selection of stuff! Bookmarked and on standby waiting for the other suggestions to fail miserably
@ adonis - :? plastic 'shrinks' in the freezer? I think not.
@ SJ - I already have the vents BUT would consider alternatives if they are easier to work with. Got a link?

once again, I thank the participants :thumbright:

The over fascia vents simply nail/screw on top of the fascia board prior to tiling/slating and felting. If you've already got that done it's not worth taking off a row of tiles and peeling back the felt.

I'm 100% sure Kelly's eye doesn't require a 70mm hole saw!
