Re-painting fascias and soffits.

Post by stevei »

I need to re paint the fascia and soffits on my house. They have been primed, undercoated and glossed in recent years but are starting to look shabby. The wood is in good condition. Can anyone advise on the best paints to use? I would like to be able to use a one coat paint. On a health and safety note, I am hiring a good quality tower scaffold for the job.

Don't use a one coat paint as it will not last as long. You need a good exterior paint system like johnstones Stormshield uc/Gloss or Sandtex flexi uc/gloss or dulux weathershield. These will last twice as long.

And preparation is important..make sure you wash it down first, and rub it down before you paint.

As TJR says above, go for a decent brand of exterior gloss and to give you a little longer between having to do it again I would go for one undercoat and two coats of gloss over the top.

Make sure the soffit is made of wood if its been previously painted....many house soffits are asbestos and should not be scraped or abraded.

Good idea to use a scaffold...much safer and more comfortable to work off.

Sandtex make excellent exterior undercoats and gloss

I would go for Sadolin superdec, self priming 8 years protection.
Give it a good wash down , sand dust off and wipe over with meths and off you go , quick drying as well.

:withstupid:

That would be my choice too, but most exterior undercoat/gloss systems are pretty good these days.

What is the best option for asbestos boards? Mine have been previously painted but are starting to peel and I need to do something about them soon. I obviously dont want to do much rubbing if I can help it.

Thank-you all for your replies. I have been doing the usual internet research and I think I will go with the Sadolin Woodshield. I've used Sadolin before (woodstain) and found it easy to apply and long lasting. Another plus for me is the quick drying as I will be removing the guttering for painting and will need to get it all replaced. Thanks again.

Looks exactly like the Superdec, I wonder is this the retail version?

Might well be an extra coat with the water based superdec.

Just had a quick look on the Sadolin website. They do look the same. I'll ask at the local paint store.

Dont do any scraping or rubbing at all. The boards are ok if not disturbed but would be hazardous to health if disturbed.

The best solution to this is cover over with PVCu.....or even better get it removed professionally

This link may be useful regarding asbestos

Removal is be the best long-term solution, but isn't likely going to be cheap I imagine.

You dont want to do ANY rubbing really...wet the area, scrape them over and re paint..preferably with a dark colour which wont show the poor surface up to much..
