What size drywall screws to use?

Post by freshoptical »

Hi there,

I am putting up some 12.5mm thickness tapered edge plasterboard and was wondering what length drywall screws are best for the job. I have seen anything from 32mm up to 42mm when i have been looking around.

Also what is the best spacing for these screws vertically on a piece of board which is 2400x1200?

3 times the plasterboard or timber as a rough guide slightly shorter for plasterboard but a bit more often so 3x12.7=38 so 35-40mm at 125- 150mm spacings

Nice one big-all.

Off to buy some of these tomorrow then. Seen a few bumper packs of 1000, even though I'm only doing a staircase and landing area. Rather overbuy though.

Is there any particular brand that are better quality than another? Or am i pretty safe either way?

a 1200x2400 board at 125-150mm assuming 400 centers is 4x2400 =18screws x 4= 72 plus another 20=40 across so about 110 per board
how many boards are you fixing ??

Well i worked out from measurements I need 7 boards, so I will be ordering 9 to be safe. However 3 of these boards are on masonry so don't need to worry about those as i am not building a stud wall and just using the direct bonding method.

Cheers for the tip. I would have used a standard posi if you hadn't said anything.

But now looking at the screws, I can see why.

They've got a bit for everything, but you have put my mind at ease you know. I was worried i was going to break the paper and have to use twice as many screws.

Was never told about this before, in my opinion this is a necessity. Cheers big-all.

110 screws per 8ft board?? you sure? I like to make sure my boards are well fixed and whilst i've never counted how many screws I use per board I don't think it's anywhere near 110 :?

plasterer is the expert i always play on the side off safety
althought 35 is one per every 8 or 9 inches

i think at 5to6 inch it would be around the 60 mark around 16 each stud plus any noggins
any way plasterer the expert so listen to him :thumbright:

what spacing between screws do you guys use ?? and what length of screws for that matter as we are all learning :salute:

Expert me, the only thing im an expert in is being a wa**er.
35 screws is about right , though more is`nt going to do any harm.
I use 32 mm course thread for single skin work. Theres really no point in longer as the grip on the wood is more than the tear strength of plasterboard.

Extracted from british gypsum website.
http://www.british-gypsum.com/pdf/DS-00 ... lBoard.pdf
Board printing
Face - screw centre markings ‘x’.
Edge - product code, EAN number,
board thickness x width x length, edge type.
Reverse - standard and certification.
Fixing
Fix boards with decorative side out to receive joint treatment or
a skim plaster finish. Lightly butt boards together. Never force
boards into position. Install fixings not closer than 13mm from
cut edges and 10mm from bound edges. Position cut edges to
internal angles whenever possible, removing paper burrs with
fine sandpaper. Stagger horizontal and vertical board joints
between layers by a minimum of 600mm. Locate boards to the
centre line of framing where this supports board edges or end

Cheers to you both, for all the help.

I've just purchased a box of 1000 based on this information, so if i do anything between 35 and 100 or so per board i will be safe for this job.

If there's any left over, im sure i will invent another project within the year to use them up on.

every 30cm according to the white book and site QS. Thats usually 36 per board.

Coarse thread is a good idea, 32mm for timber.
