chimney stack supported by an rsj
Hi All,
I thought i just show you the pictures of the how i supported the chimney stack to place the RSJ.
My ground floor chimney is already removed, as i still got my 1st floor chimney stack is still in situ, as there is wardrobe behind it, so they may now be removed until we changed the wardrobe.
Rsj was calculated by Structual Engineer 178x102x19ub.
Rsj was 5 mtr long.

So what's holding the top up now, and please don't say the 4" single wall built on the RSJ.

Re: chimney stack supported by an rsj
Hi Sruff,
RSJ is 5 mtr long and it sits on the inner wall of the outside loadbearing wall and the other end sits on the centre wall.
I have supported the chimney stack by 2 strongboy/ acro and then removed the bricks and now i am rebuliding the bricks on top of the Rsj to where the strongboy/ acro is and then pack it tight with slates.
Am doing something wrong, as this what the builder told me to do.

Re: chimney stack supported by an rsj
You can't support that weight on a single skin load of bricks piled on top of each other.
How are you going to tie it all in and close the ends.
It may be the camera angle but the stack in the 5th pic down looks like it's started to lean into the room already.

Re: chimney stack supported by an rsj
not sure why your keeping it wouldve been easier to remove the whole thing and patch the roof(properly of course) seeing as ground floor stacks already been removed!? looks like it wouldve been less work

Thank heavens those photos are in reverse order. i think I would have had a heart attack before i had seen the all otherwise. That's one scarey looking piece of engineering.

Re: chimney stack supported by an rsj
So the steel is sitting straight onto the brickwork?
Do building control know that you're doing this. More importantly if not does your neighbour know your doing it without professional advice from someone on site?
It might just be the pics but from what I can see you need to get an opinion from someone that's there

Re: chimney stack supported by an rsj
Hi All,
I have contacted a builder and he said send me e-mail by picture and i will have a look at it.
I told the Neighbour and he does not mind, as long there is no damage to his side.
It has not gone through Building regs, but it has been checked by SE to calulate the RSJ beam.
Steel is sitting on a pad stone set in on either side of the wall,so one end is on the outer wall on the inner brick (loadbearing) and the centre wall (loadbearing) at the span of 4mtr and the rsj is 5 mtr.

Hi All,
Spoke to structual engineer and he saw what i have done and he told me to tie to the party wall, so i will have to return on the end and brick all the side.
He told if you do not intend to use the chimney you can make a frame by 4x2 on the end wall, making like ladder type, as this can be accpetable if you do not use the gas fire.
However i have bricked it up the side.
While it is half time i thought i load the pictures up.
Come on England.

Blimey Siraz, that is one major DIY job!
I would of gone to Building control in the first place though and I would not of taken the advice from a builder until I had checked with Building control.

Re: chimney stack supported by an rsj
I still say the center wall is not good enough, and needs tying into the main wall.
One good wind and that wall could buckle and go no problem.

Re: chimney stack supported by an rsj
The side wall is tide in to the party wall and the centre wall is just bricked normal and use tie wire.
Shown it to the builder and SE and said it is fine now.
I will call the Building control officer who used to work with me when i was serving my time in plumbing, as he works for the council as as building control officer.
See what he has to say.

Hi Scruff
Pic 526 you can see there is a wall behind the new wall at the centre, which is the centre wall of the house, which i have bricked up, as there were only few courses bricked when i knocked the wall down and it was not bricked right up to the chimney stack to the top, so i bricked up to the new wall height.
