Drill too wide

Post by Mark-J »

I messed up. The drill is too wide for me to use on the wooden bracket below.

Image

I was going to go for a 440mm extra-long drill bit but they are too expensive. I was then considering screwing by hand, but my wrists have a bit of arthritis so that's not really an option. I could use the drill at a tilt and screw in at a bit of an angle, but I don't really want to; not at least until I exhaust other possibilities.

This will do the job, yes?

Just to be clear, when you say "drill bit" you're talking about a screwdriver bit rather than a drill bit for drilling holes?
Have you got a quarter inch drive ratchet from a socket set and a converter to go to a hex bit?
That'll work if the screws not too tight.

I'd need to make a pilot hole in the wood and then get the screw in there.

I'm thinking the above linked Makita ratchet set will work as far as getting the screw in, but I'm still going to have to make a pilot hole.

EDIT: Product description says it has a ¼" driver socket, ¼" magnetic bit holder

Drill the bracket from behind before putting it up and use a long screwdriver with a rubber glove to improve your grip.

What about a right angle attachment for your drill like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3j_gLam-iw I bought one years ago to fit some cornice on kitchen cabinets, never used it again bit it is always there. About £7 on Ebay.

As toolbox says drill the bracket from behind. Again as he says a long screwdriver is best if your wrists will stand it. The trouble with the ratchet type is keeping enough pressure on, unless you use Torx head screws.

The other answer is something like this
https://www.screwfix.com/p/erbauer-angl ... 10mm/6746h

I see people saying that they have used it for driving screws.

ETA. DWD got there first!

Hi Toolbox

I can't get at the bracket from behind. I've already made pilot holes in the wood, but there's no way to get through the grey portion (in the diagram).

Hi Dewaltdisney / Dave54

Those drill parts looks idea!

Thanks all :thumbleft:

one of these https://www.screwfix.com/p/erbauer-magn ... 00mm/84662 will probably do it, cheaper than the other options as well

^ Only problem is that it's too short by about 30mm. Otherwise I'd be using it.

Just add another "normal" bit holder to the end?

ETA. Thanks for the link to that long bit holder w~o. :thumbright: I've been meaning to get one of those for ages, and it's always "next time"

Ever seen an off line driver ?:

Trend sell a decent quality one (seen above, in conjunction with a Trend Snappy Quick-Chuck - the gold item) and Kamasa do quite a decent one, too. Am alternative, although far less durable and less able to transmit huge amounts of torque, is the flexible driver:

which can get you out of some tight corners (or rather into them). For PZD screws I often just resort to using a 6in (150mm) or 12in (300mm) bit holder and driving the screw at a slight angle ("camming out"). This is a 305mm version from Milwaukee:
