How to get TV sound without a TV?

Post by APDIY »

There are times when I'm DIY-ing (Inside and outside my home) when I'd like to be able to listen to the sound on TV and don't need to watch. Like a portable radio - even if it does need a mains elec supply.

Is there a way of doing this short of lugging around a portable TV, please?

Its called radio, sound without moving pictures

Back in the days of analogue TV it was possible, now its all digital it's not as easy as the signal needs to be decoded, A Bluetooth radio or Bluetooth speaker and a smart phone may be a option then you can stream any service you like, play podcasts or even an audio book

If you can get wifi then you can watch/listen to live broadcasts on your phone.

Thank you, Rorschach.
Yes, I have wifi.
Would that 'come off' my data allowance? I use GiffGaff @£6/month and have a low Data allocation as I hardly ever, use that facility.

Thanks - I can remember when they were called Wireless and my father had a long piece of wire stretching down the garden as an aerial.
From the reading I've done - and what I could understand, as you say the change to Digital has made matters very complicated - especially for a complete novice.

Is that data allowance on your mobile phone plan or on your home internet package?

Above are my opinions Below is my signature.

Would you hit a nail with a shoe because you don't have a hammer? of course not, then why work on anything electrical without a means of testing Click Here to buy a "tester" just because it works, does NOT mean it is safe.

 If gloom had a voice, it would be me.

:idea1: Click Here for a video how to add/change pictures

It's called a set top box, not that they are put on top of a TV any more, but all mine have phono outputs the problem is knowing what channel you have tuned into, but my IceCrypt box you can change the order to suit what you want, I often listen to radio on satellite as FM and freeview in this area is useless.

Yes, GiffGaff is the clue - my limited Data ration is on my CellPhone.
@ ericmark - my searches online have taken me time and again to Webpages from USA - and from what I can understand they use what we call a Set Top Box to do what I want to do.
If I get it right those boxes converted the Digital signal to Analogue to cater for 'old' analogue TVs. I've got a couple of those boxes sitting around.
Can I then follow your route Bob225 » Fri Oct 04, 2019 10:44 am ?
If so, what do I have to do, please?

If you find a set top box (STB) with scart or even spdif you can take the audio to an amplifier or bluetooth adapter

T Y for that, Bob225.
Yes, I have a couple of STBs which have scart ports and some scart leads.
Have you any suggestions as to which bluetooth adapter to look out for?
Regards
