Posted this on another site yesterday before realising it was moribund!
New member, first post. Quality German Bulthaup birch ply 4 place kitchen table. 15yo, cost >£1500 + matching benches a grand each, original coating lasted about 5 years. I've stripped, sanded & re-coated with :
Polyurethane water based varnish - 4yrs - didn't like ink, beetroot, wine
Oil based varnish - 5 years - didn't like wet spills, ink
Osmo Polyx oil - 1 year! - just wore through!
The Polyx gave by far the best initial finish. Tin said 2 coats which I thought was low but went with it and it just hasn't lasted at all, unfortunately. Table gets kitchen spray / degreaser to shift food? Table gets used for every meal so constant spills of oils, vinegars, sauces & drinks.
So, what do I try next?
More layers Polyx?
Lacquer?
Something else?
Some combination?
Just accept nothing lasts forever?

I have used Sadolin wood oil on my oak kitchen table and it's very good, you can re oil as and when but won't give the gloss finish of a varnish or lacquer which I use for side and hallway tables.

Thanks guys!
The deluxe diamond glaze is just another water based urethane varnish I used first time around so not sure about that? Each time i used a varnish I put 5 or 6 coats on and it did ok. I think I’m going try the polyx oil but with many more coats as it truly gave the best finish I just felt it was still permeable. It advises to use sparingly so maybe I just need to build up the layers? If it doesn’t last I’ll give lacquer a try.

I have used Ronseal diamond hard floor varnish in a number of table tops over the years. It has always been a tough surface that has taken loads of abuse. I think one issue you may have is the previous coatings not being compatible. Oils sink right in and are always there and I would expect that would react somewhat with any new finish coat you apply. Probably this would manifest itself as areas 'letting go of the top finish making it look worn and uneven.
It is always best to stick with the same and refinish with the product as needed.
