TESTING FLOURECENT STARTERS
We are having a clear-out of my father in laws house and came across boxes and boxes and boxes of fluorescent light starters.
They all look new but knowing my father in law they could be old/not working, he had a habit of buying stuff he didn't need/want or holding onto cr*p .
Is there any way of testing these with a multimeter ?
We don't have any fluorescent light fittings at home and neither did he at his house (so why he bought them God only knows ?).
I'm guessing these are working but would like to know if there is an easy way to test them with perhaps with a multimeter or without having to find someone who's has fluorescent fittings and go into their house to test them, which might be seen as a bit of a cheek

Re: TESTING FLOURECENT STARTERS
It sounds like a trip to the dump. Fluorescent lights are becoming quite rare now as LED lighting is replacing them. I cannot think they would be easily placed even as a gift. I might be wrong?

Re: TESTING FLOURECENT STARTERS
I agree that they are not worth anything................until you look on ebay, they are going for around £1.25 EACH
But that is being sold in pairs, but that said you could always sell them by the box full.

Would you hit a nail with a shoe because you don't have a hammer? of course not, then why work on anything electrical without a means of testing Click Here to buy a "tester" just because it works, does NOT mean it is safe.

Re: TESTING FLOURECENT STARTERS
Years ago working in Algeria at Christmas we wanted some tree lights, so 12 x 6 watt 24 volt bulbs in series, together with a starter the latter made them flash a little erratic, but looked good.
So I suspect with a bulb in series they will flash showing they work, but I also had problems with another job where the starter had to be the right number, some thing about our fly catchers resulted is a standard starter not working, so cost of returns could cost more in postage then you get for them.
Although fluorescent lights are still used, we now use electronic ballasts which don't need starters, and new boxed pack of 25 is around £15 from screwfix, so really not worth the hassle even if they are all new.
