I got a (japanese copy) strat with a broken neck, stripped it down, took all the electrics out, cant remember what stripper i used to get the laquer off the body, used a jigsaw to recut a headstock from a neck blank.

tore up a load of old magazines and glued them in a pattern onto the body then varnished the body replaced all electrics and tremelo springs and then bolted the neck back on, strung it twice and played it 4 times before i got an archtop.

roots, how do you compensate for the arch top affecting the action? or is it just an ornament. I've got to admit it looks nice,

sorry the archtop is an ibanez blues guitar with a bigsby bridge and tremelo, bloody lovely guitar sounds awesome but a bugger to keep in tune!

I did the circuit from a kit from ampmaker.com. SE-5A with a few mods.
I couldn't put the parts together myself for less so I went with the kit.
The speaker is a salvaged 16ohm 1970 Celestion Green back.
The amp kicks out a mighty 2.5 watts in this config
I was a bench technician for a few years after college so I know how to do this sort of thing. But I was very impressed with the instructions from ampmaker. With enough patience anyone could do it.

Cooooool.

2.5W might not seem like much, but I bet it's plenty loud. The ear doesn't respond to sound levels in a linear way, so 5W, for example, is nothing like twice as 'loud' as 2.5.

It's surprising loud!
What was probably an accidentally discovery fifty years ago is that a guitar amp sounds best when its valves are driven over (overdrive) their ability to cleanly reproduce sound and start to distort in a pleasant way.
In a big 500 watt monster amp you have to crank the thing up to very un-neighbourly levels to get this sound.
These little 2 to 5 watt amps are perfect for practice, recording and small gigs.
