Gatwick at standstill because of Drone(s)

Don't get this 110,000 people due through an airport and they close the airport because a piddling drone. Then the police say they can't shoot it down so they get the army in. Is this some kind of subliminal message "this is what brexit will look like" or is it just HSE gone mad or what

use something to jam it
use a large bird of prey to take it down
involve private companies that specialise in this kind of thing

I thought this was b*llocks. I could knock it down with my 12 gauge shotgun with little chance of the spent pellets hurting anyone when they fall to earth. A few guys with shotguns could keep the runway clear and blow the drone to buggery. I was thinking of a signal jammer on the radio control channels would do it as well.

The idiot who is doing this needs a bloody good hiding, put him in the Gatwick departure lounge and watch his human rights get recognised.

Picture of it on twitter does look on the larger side, and there is more than one of them, so maybe some group with deliberate intentions of disruption. 5 years inprison but they should be still able to get their drugs flown in over the wall

Isn't the range on a shotgun not long enough bearing in mind you are shooting higher than a low flying bird, also a rifle bullet if it misses wouldn't it have to land somewhere and may hit someone on the ground?

This is a very complicated issue, taking out drones is much harder than people think it is.

Birds won't work, shooting won't work, jamming won't work, attacking with another drone is mostly going to fail.

Also I do not believe this is a person being silly. I think this is deliberate and probably a test to see how much trouble it causes. This is an easy act of terrorism. Cause chaos and panic, costs bugger all, don't need to blow yourself up and with careful planning there is zero chance of getting caught. With a couple of drones you could shut down an airport for a week, no bombs needed.

What gets me is the kinds of shop (at least round here) where smaller drones are sold - they tend to be the sort of secondhand mobile phone/unlocking/accessory/repair shops which also deal in secondhand games and the like. Really salubrious.

I worked on one job where our (remote) crane driver was a licensed drone pilot who flew his drone (about £10k worth) doing video land and crop surveys, roof surveys and the like at weekends. I recall him telling us about where he bought his drone insisting on having a copy of his drone license, proof of address, etc before selling to him. Can't see that happening in a secondhand phone shop, somehow
