A rant. not worthy of Kellys eye buuuttt

Post by wine~o »

A rant. not worthy of Kellys eye buuuttt....

Right, so yesterday I needed some Chicken stock.. I make my own every 3 months or so and freeze it in ice-cube bags. I'd run out.

Sooo went to supermarket and not wishing to buy stock cubes (which are mostly salt) settled on a pack of four "Stock pots".

I didn't have my reading glasses with me, so couldn't read all the ingredients... but as there was nothing in bold assumed there were no major allergens in there. (My allergies- Peanut ... danger of death, and Wheat... danger of spending 2 months sh1tting through a needle.)

Anyway once home read the full list of ingredients...

*concentrated chicken stock
*glucose syrup
*salt
*sugar
*yeast extract
*Chicken fat
*carrots#
*Palm oil
*Leek#
*Parsley#
*carrot juice concentrate#

A couple of other ingredients... Buuuuttt the ingredients with the # (carrots/leek/parsley/carrot juice) are apparently from "sustainable resources" How the F3ck can they not be "sustainable" ????

And then on opening said product... the foil lid isn't recyclable and the little pot it comes in isn't recyclable

It's like alien testicles in the vernacular.
"Green beau locks"
All these companies think they have to be seen to be something.
There was something on the other day about palm oil not being sustainable.

Worthy effort wine~o - I'd give it a solid 7 out of 10 for whinginess.... :B

Yeah the 'sustainable' tag really hacks me off - it's as if the manufacturers HAVE to put that there to claim some sort of kudos with the green industry and avoid protests by the green welly faggots.

Works both ways though - we're in negotiation to purchase more land around our place from the local Forestry Commission so my application, where it said 'purpose' was the tongue-in-cheek "sustainable fruit growth" - seriously! We've got the ok, just haggling over price now!

Tip - if you want some good 'stock' then get yourself a tub of Knorr Chicken Boullion (I get mine at the wholesalers). Keeps 'forever' and make up a teaspoon at a time (for 1/2 litre of stock).

The tub it comes in is wholly recyclable too.

Bold doesn't show well on this machine.
(Always blame anything but yourself! )
But no, I can't see how leek parsley and carrot juice can be anything but sustainable.

Mind you, I was talking to a farmer friend last night in the pub. He runs a "family farm" type operation. He said he counted the machinery in a field working on potatoes for one of the big companies. 26 machines.

How is that "sustainable" I wonder?

b*llox to that... I normally do 3 x chicken carcasses (sp?) couple of carrots. onion, peppercorns little salt. home grown bay/herbs some other stuff... simmer for about 5 hours. Strain. freeze into ice cube bags.

I didn’t know if they ran the knors advert in England from the late 70s early 80s(obviously not) about jock getting his pea and ham soup.
The response to his Mrs was “pea and ham soup, from a chicken? Now that’s clever”

Anyway, nobody got the link so I’ll get my coat

Ps. Anybody remember that advert or am I imagining it!

For pea and ham soup, you (and Knorr) should be using the stock from cooking a ham hock.
One day it will all be firewood.
