I have to whinge. Short version (long is too long) a hotel offering daily continental or a la carte breakfast - this means a certain thing to me. It does NOT mean a choice of an omelette or toast. Or am I being too picky??

Omelette, toast or cross aunt(s) - a selection of fruit juices, cereals, fruit, jams and marmalade

Depending on how poncey the hotel is and where it is, you may have a charcuterie

i have stayed in some very nice places and heck holes over the years

Cereal, toast, pastries, fruit, jams etc, meat and cheese, yoghurt.

Omelette I wouldn't really consider part of a continental.

I have to agree with that, and go one further, Omelette is not in any breakfast, it's a lunch or evening thing.

Many moons ago I was working in a big company (Sub contractor) and in the restaurant they had an Omelette chef. Yep, all he would do is make Omelettes to your requirements there and then.

Continental breakfast for me is pretty much anything, but it must be cold. Not saying I like it cold, its just everything available is always cold. E.G. Yogurt, croissant, salami, peel it fruit (I.e banana, orange) Fruit in juice / syrup, ham, jam, Juices to drink, cereal* oh and cheese.

*Not porridge

My "Dictionary of Food and Drink" (pub. 1983) says:- " n. a light breakfast typically consisting of bread rolls, preserves (e.g.jam) and coffee"

Like I said, Not Breakfast!

That's very common in the US, Europe and some higher end hotels here in the UK.

A continental breakfast for me is an Egg McMuffin in Palma airport. In Germany, boiled eggs feature commonly with rolls jam and cheese.

Egg stations are always busy on cruise ships. Omelettes and all sorts.

Most interesting poached eggs I have had were at Reid’s Palace in Madeira , poached in red wine , at 9 am with a glass of champers.

But frankly now days I do basically stick to bread , cereals coffee and fruit as I find the English and loads of eggs just makes me feel lethargic in the mornings

Well for our 'continental or a la carte' breakfast offerings we had an omelette and toast the first time (we were offered and omelette OR toast but managed to get both), the second time we just had toast, and the third we had a slice of bread inside an omelette... rather below that of my expectations!

As a mate of mine used to say, "All right as a snack 'til we find a caff!"
