Very confused!

Hi I'm new here, and looks like the best place for advice, so...

It's just a question about my hot water cylinder.

I have a boiler in the kitchen, and a hot water cylinder at the top floor in an airing cupboard. There is a control box next to the boiler, which has two red lights if either the hot water or heating is on.

The hot water light is always on (is this is a good idea?) and does this control the cylinder on and off setting?

It's a Worcester Greenstar HE System Boiler, with a Myson temperature dial, and a Myson on/off control box with timings.

Yeah it's the MEP2c Programmer, and the MRT1 Thermostat

Ok It has 4 dip switches on the back, check that dip 4 is up in the pumped position.

Do you have the manual for it.

Do you also have a motorized valve and what is the make model.

Yeah the 4th is up. It goes like this... Down up down up. What does this mean?

I don't know if I have a motorised valve, do you want the make and model of the boiler or cylinder?

It wont make much difference. The red light being on just means that if needed the boiler can reheat the hot water cylinder when you draw off some hot water.

The cylinder thermostat will turn off the boiler once the desired hot water temperature is reached, so although the red light is on 24/7, the boiler won't be.

Do you think it will use more energy leaving it on constant or using it as of when I need it. All the hot water heats up in the tank. I've recently moved into this place and I'm just getting used to the central heating etc. I would like to know the most economical way to use the whole system, ie boiler, hot cylinder. I just use the heating when I need it.

You have a fault, maybe component, maybe an installation error, maybe user error and programming.

What makes you think there is a fault? When the hot water is turned on via the Myson programmer it makes noises every now and then, I'm guessing that's the water heating up to keep it up to the set temperature. I happens all day and all night.

What do people normally have their programmers set to?

Good question, Should the led be on or not. ?

If the HWS mode is off then no it shouldn't be, whereas if the DHW mode is on it should be.

How you run the DHW depends on occupancy and the demand.

If the property is empty during the day, the norm would be a couple of hours at night and a top-up in the morning, and maybe longer at weekends.

Oh right ok, we'll I have set it on a timer now, so it's on 2 hours at a time. But why is the cylinder still heating up? Even when it's off
