Remove Duct Tape residue from plastic bath

Post by rlx »

While re-decorating the bathroom we left some duct tape on the white plastic bath for a couple of months.

Now there is a cream-coloured residue of the tape adhesive on the bath. Scraping very hard with a finger-nail takes minute bits off but at that rate it'll be a year before I get rid of it.

What is the best solvent to use on this surface to remove the residue?

Hi Rix,

Soak it with a little white spirit to soften it, then scrape with soft plastic kitchen tool such as a spatula.

I find a bit of heat from a hairdryer can help. Try that first before Simon's solvent approach,

Hi there,

Got it off my windows, using my own spit and leaving it for 5 mins.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Tried white spirit -- nothing doing.

Soaking for 1/2 hour with WD40 seems to allow a little to be scraped off but it looks like this will take multiple attempts.

Maybe T-Cut is the thing. Does anyone know the active ingredient of T-Cut?

Hi Rix,

T-Cut will scratch the bath! You will then have to polish out the scratches.

You can get a dedicated product for removing glue residue it is called label remover, it works really well, but you should test it first to make sure it does not react

Many thanks for this, at last a solution [sorry for the pun] to all those "bits" left behind. Glad I joined this site just for this alone.

I have just removed the Windows and the Intel stickers from my laptop and a good spray of WD40 onto a soft cloth removed all the sticky gunge that was left behind.
Also used it to remove glue from bathroom tiles when the small curtain hooks have broken in the past.
