New pc.............

For various reasons I am going to build a PC for myself.
Its going to have a solid state hard drive (240gb) and..............windows XP

It will NEVER go on the www as it will have one specific purpose and thats all it will do. (The specific programme it will run only works on XP or win 95)
I have ordered the case and mother board* Now all I have to do is wait for it to arrive, I will post how it goes. (and pictures)


*I have ordered a pre assembled mobo so it comes with processor, fan, and ram, the case comes with 500w power supply.

I have checked the current PC and its hard drive is 40gb (Shows how old it must be) and that is not even 1/3 full
All I have to do now is to find my (very old) copy of win xp

you may have issues with drivers for that motherboard - do they have XP drivers for the specific model you are purchasing
for sound , video card , wifi etc
should be on the motherboard support site - Drivers

Personally I would not run xp on a new hardware as there is very little driver support these days and it
can become a major pita

I run legacy programs in a XP VM if needs be, ultra stable and hardware and emulation work very well

There are many VM programs out there but the 2 big ones are VMware Workstation and Oracle VM Virtualbox

I was unaware of that, it makes interesting reading as the first "topic" seems to say its not proven to not work / cause problems and the 2nd "topic" is similar but he was told make copies of the SSD.

I have ordered the parts now, the writer of the software said it will not run on anything higher than XP I have never doubted him, but since he is no longer with us, I need to keep the programme going for as long as I can and i figured an SSD was the way to go, but I have been thinking about it, the programme and its "bits" really is small, so I will also get a small (in GB size) mechanical HD and see how i get on.

sata support may be a issue unless you setup the sata controller in the bios to legacy and disable UEFI

If you install Windows 7 you can install Microsofts xp VM (no longer supported but free)

Thanks for that.
Sadly the parcels that arrived were not quite what I was expecting. One is the motherboard and processor & RAM the other is an old pc with win xp on it (ebay £40) it works, and I was able to load the one programme I want onto it (and it worked, not at first, I had to load a driver for an interface that is not supported, but the www says it is and the pc downloaded something and all is well)

I am thinking about getting an IDE hard drive and putting XP on that as I guess its the HD failing that I am worried about.

I am going to leave everything (in respect of the pc) now till next weekend. got to have time off over this bank holiday, thanks again Bob225.

if you cant get hold of an ide drive you can always use a ide to sata adapter aka sata to Pata adapter (I have pulled plenty of data off old drives)

Case has arrived, looks like a Carey Holzman favourite (It has cable management in the back)

(As it now says, more for your amusement at my expense)

I have started to assemble it. (I actually put the mobo in the other day)
Various problems.....

1) The main ATX 4 way lead is too short. Spent time extending that.
2) The main multiway power cable is a tad too short to go out through the side and back in again (Would look nicer if it did)
3) The Digital hard drive will not fit ANYWHERE (Yes I put it in its red "caddy") its just too small to fit in the bay.
4) Switch on..................nothing happened.
5) Unplugged everything re plugged it back on pressed power button Fans came on pc complained it did not know what to do. (I expected that as it has no operating system.)

Plugged in external DVD drive (Via USB) put windows xp disc in........ its loading.


I am expecting it to complain about the serial number, but I will worry about that when it stops (I am expecting it to stop and ask for serial number, but not for another 40+ mins)

your ssd will mount to the back of the motherboard tray in 2 places (right hand side just above the 3.5 bays) the bag tied to the cables should have the drive rails for the 3.5" bays

All hard drives are digital - you mean its a SSD (solid state disk)

iirc xp no longer activates online, but you can do it via the phone ( automated or by speaking to a Indian call center )
