Afterthought. You should seriously consider a backup before you even open the case. Just in case...

SSD's are pretty reliable if you go for a branded name. The speed increase over a mechanical drive is insane.

As already said best to use one to boot and the old drive as a data disk. You may sometimes be asked for the windows key when firing it up for the first time but quite rarely.

I use a 250GB Samsung SSD because when I built this pc that was all you could get and it's been dead reliable. I also have 4 3TB mechanical drives in Raid 10 for data and it still flies some 6 years after I built it but that's down to some of the other components as well.

I have 32GB of ram and have experimented with RAM disks whilst video editing. It's insanely fast but a little hit and miss whether it crashes or not lol

Thanks mate. I do know how to change RAM but it was over 10 years ago.
