tile adhesive and grout external

Post by etaf »

Hi All
searched and read a few threads here,

but just wanted to ask again, as its an outside area fully exposed to elements, as west facing lot of sun in afternoon, and also we get lots of wind as we are near to the coast , and rain & salt etc into the porch
Rarely get snow , I think only had once in the 25 years and that was a sprinkle

Our outside porch tiling, which has been in place for over 25years (mother-in-law lived here before we purchased)

When it rains water always stays in the top right corner , quite a pool, brother-in-law sealed it all up years ago, so now I'm about to rip it all out , start again and also lay the tiles so they slope toward the path and not towards the door.

been a long while since i bothered to tile anything

The porch is West facing , and fills with leaves and rain all the time.

Wife has not yet chosen tiles, my questions are

Whats the best type of adhesive to use , no-nonsense from screwfix
https://www.screwfix.com/p/no-nonse...k ... _container

we had a lot of success with their no-nonsense products, stripper and filler

Grout , again best exterior use .

I will be taking all the panelling out , which is batterned to the wall and replacing
may post a different thread for that

image of porch attached
Tiles are 145mm across the top , so probably 150mm with a taper

I broke the tile yesterday hoping they may all come up and i could just relay, so now the jobs changed to a complete strip and start again, for the entire thing!!!!!

Shame, looked nice. Like a bath perhaps you needed to silicone seal around the edges (you used suitable waterproof grout as well) to stop the Westerly rain seeping in

Yep, All waterproof flexible , BALI I think is the make, grout for internal & external use
Like a bath perhaps you needed to silicone seal around the edges
YEP all sealed round all the edges, and made sure NO water could get in , under the Marine Ply and the hardwood, Plastic above the tiles and step , all sealed
Used Hippo Pro3 silicon, Would have used CT1 , but the yard had this stuff available and was finding materials difficult to get, and reviews showed Pro3 as good.

Silly question, did you prime the substrate before you tiled? What adhesive did you use and what grout did you go with?

yes , i used Norcross Primer & Adhesive after talking to their support line in June , also used some Rapid concrete to lift an area, which they said
Cant remember the grout, its a Waterproof, flexible bal i think , MICROMAX 2 - for internal/external use.
Really good I emailed Norcross this morning, and had a response from the man in the area, agreed to look at in new year at my request , as i do not want a dangerous trip hazard area if they lift a tile

Has the tile come away clean from the adhesive or has the tile got the adhesive on the back but has lifted away from the substrate?

You will have to lift all the tile. Post a photo when the tile has been lifted.
You mention ply, where and how have you used ply?
Where you have a small brick riser then the outside corner should not be bare tile but a heavy duty edging.
