What are the best plasterboard wall plug fixings?
Hi, i am not great at DIY, i am only wanting to put some shelves up but they will be holiding a couple of books.
I was wondering what the best plug / fixings would be?
Nearly everything you buy only comes with plugs for brick but they never give you anything for plasterboard.
Thanks
James

The fixing you use will depend on the load you need to carry and the type of plasterboard wall you have.
Books are heavy and people often overload shelves. Something like Corefix would be best if you have brick behind the plasterboard, better to be a bit overkill. If it's a stud wall though then fix directly into the studs.

Plaster board is never a good anchor but one secret is to undersize the hole, Fisher Plaster Board plugs are good and for heavier I use Rawlplug Hollow Wall Anchors, 38 to 40mm length will fix in 12.5mm board, don't get them too long or they will not tighten but spin and then you cannot get them out. I don't have the fixing tool but put a penny washer under the bolt head to draw the anchor nut and spread the wings, also I squeeze some adhesive, like No Nails into the plug hole ( even used some Gum Gum) first, then tap in the fixing, let it set, before tightening the final screw.

the only drawback ive found with gripits would be that they supply the smaller red and yellow grip its with standard screws. some people might not realise that say of your hanging a shelf bracket made of timber that ya can swap the screw for a longer screw if its needed. they may thonk you must use the supplied screw. obviously being trade i know i can swap a screw as needed but a diyer may not
